Choosing the right Voidomatis River hike depends entirely on your fitness level and time. The river provides both a gentle valley path and a demanding route through one of the deepest gorges in the world.

What is the Ice Age Trail?

The Ice Age Trail is a flat, 5-kilometer hiking path that runs directly beside the Voidomatis River.

This easy route connects Aristi Bridge to Klidonia Bridge. It takes about two hours to complete. The trail stays shaded under ancient plane trees for most of the journey. Wear sturdy shoes, as the dirt path can be uneven in spots.

How hard is the Vikos Gorge hike?

The full Vikos Gorge traverse is strenuous and requires good physical condition.

The route covers 12.5 kilometers and takes five to seven hours. You will descend into a 1,000-meter-deep canyon from Monodendri to Vikos village. You need plenty of water and proper hiking boots to tackle the rocky terrain.

What is the best time to hike?

May through October are the best months for hiking in the Vikos-Aoös National Park.

The trails are accessible year-round. However, summer and early autumn provide the driest paths. Temperatures drop significantly in the deep gorge shade, so pack a light jacket even in summer.

Where do you park for a Voidomatis River hike?

Parking is available near the main stone bridges at Aristi and Klidonia.

If you hike the Ice Age Trail independently, you will need to walk back to your car or arrange a local taxi. Public transport in the Zagori region is very infrequent. A rental car is the most practical way to reach the trailheads.
